Commonly Asked Air Conditioning Questions

Does having an AC system increase the value of my property?

In a word, yes.

Having central air conditioning installed in your property can add an average of 10% to your property’s value. So even though installing a central air conditioning system in your Calgary property may seem like a hassle right now, the long-term rewards of doing so benefit both your physical and financial health and well-being!

What is the SEER rating for AC systems?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it is a scaled rating system that measures air conditioner efficiency in easy-to-digest number ratings.

SEER is calculated by dividing the cooling BTU output by the watt-hour energy input. In other words, it calculates the ratio of cooling output divided by energy consumption over the span of a typical usage season.

How much does it cost to install an air conditioner?

Not all air conditioner units are created equal, and their pricing reflect this. So while it’s tempting to opt for the cheapest unit out there, chances are very high that you’ll end up paying even more in the long-run.  Inefficient energy usage, more frequent A/C servicing, unexpected repairs, and replacement are just some of the financial liabilities that “cheapo” A/C systems create.

Zazac works with your budget to source the very best and most sustainable A/C solution for your needs. Please contact us to discuss the specific details of your situation. After understanding your unique needs, we can give you a 100% solid and informed quote for the most optimal air conditioning system for you.

How common is it to have air conditioning in Calgary?

According to our city’s website, air conditioners in Calgary are becoming increasingly common. In fact, the percentage of Albertans who owned or were actively looking to install an air conditioning system increased 44% between 2009 and 2019 (with a full 1/3 of Albertans owning or intending to own an air conditioner in 2019).

This reflects the steady increase in Calgarians contacting us for air conditioning services that we have experienced over the past several years. The summer of 2022 was especially high volume, and it is expected that this increased demand will continue for years to come.

Did You Know…

Since ancient times, humans have been working to find ways to control indoor air temperature and humidity, allowing for greater home comfort and productivity.

  • Ancient Egyptians hung damp reed mats in windows to cool the air passing through. As the mats’ moisture evaporated, heat also was sucked out while the air inside became more moist (which is great in dry climates like Calgary).
  • The ancient Chinese also developed basic air conditioning systems. These systems used rotary fans and water-powered wheels cool indoor spaces. The ancient Chinese also discovered how to store ice and (not surprisingly) invented ice cream!
  • In 1902, Willis Carrier developed the first modern air conditioning system. Carrier’s system used coils and compressors to cool air and remove moisture, allowing for exact temperature control of indoor spaces.

How Do Modern Air Conditioning Systems Work?

Modern air conditioning systems work by removing heat and humidity from the air inside a home (or any building) and releasing it outside by using a combination of refrigeration and ventilation.

The basic components of an air conditioning system include a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator, and a refrigerant (not water). The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, which then moves to the condenser. The condenser releases the heat absorbed by the refrigerant outside, using a fan to blow air over the condenser fins.

After the heat is released, the refrigerant moves to the evaporator, where it expands and absorbs heat from the air inside the building. A fan blows air over the evaporator, and the cooled indoor air is then distributed through ducts to different parts of the building.

As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, it also absorbs moisture, which is then drained outside the home through a condensate drain.

Overall, air conditioning systems work by removing heat and humidity from the air inside a home, office building, or commercial space and releasing it outside, using a combination of refrigeration and ventilation.

Excellent Work

Sebastien was my go-to guy when I worked as a maintenance manager for a restaurant group. If we had an issue with any of our HVAC or refrigeration Sebastien was just a phone call away. Because of his excellent work, I hired for my new company as well. I would highly recommend his service as he has never let me down.
